Spicy Cuts – Volume 1

Posted by

This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now. Those of you who have followed the blog for the past few years of course know it all started with “Tuesday Tunes” which became “Talkin’ Tunes” and each week or so I’d write a blog covering the new music of the week and the ones I liked most. As it moved on I started writing about everything that came out, whether I liked it or not, and also just talked about everything going on in music. As much as I love talking about that stuff, it takes A VERY LONG TIME and I never know when to stop. I know especially right now there are people who are losing their jobs and have compromised immune systems and are wondering how they’re going to get through this pandemic, but I’d ask you to keep in mind that blogging for 7 people who click on my Instagram stories can be really hard to. Some would say, even harder.

BUT my point is that I want to share my favorite new music releases and get your thoughts, opinions, recommendations, etc. And with that, the idea for SPICY CUTS was born.

The songs I’ll shout out in this series (which will hopefully be weekly on Fridays or Saturdays) will simply be a list (and maybe a little sprinkle of commentary here and there) of the spiciest cutlets of music that have come out in the past week. (DJ “Chicken Parm”…cutlets….get it?)

I’ll be keeping a running playlist on Apple Music that you can add to your own library (Spotify users, just once take the road less traveled and switch to the superior streaming service, I beg you). After a few weeks I’ll cap it off and start a new one and let y’all know when that happens.

Since it’s the first volume, I’m gonna include songs that have come out in the past few weeks that I’ve had heavy in the rotation first and then hit you with the real fresh meat.

IN HEAVY ROTATION

The Other Side -Justin Timberlake and SZA (Another heater from the Trolls Cinematic Universe)

Oprah’s Bank Account -Lil Yachty & Dababy (feat. Drake)

Cardigan -Don Toliver

If you like this check out his full album, this guy’s gonna be huge.

Supalonely -BENEE (feat. Gus Dapperton)

Yes, this is a tik tok song. I’m still young and cool.

Fruits of the Spirit -Jay Electronica

His debut album finally came out last week and it’s incredible. Highly recommend for fans of more lyrically-focused rap. The production is super unique, he’s spitting BARS and Jay-Z pops up on more than half the tracks. So good.

The Steps -HAIM

The guitar riff in this is so fire. These girls SHRED.

Houston Dubai -Vampire Weekend

Bonus track from Father Of the Bride (my favorite of album of 2019). Literally could not miss. Feel good vibes necessary for quarantine.

ringtone -100 gecs (remix) [feat. Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, and Kero Kero Bonito]

Tondo -Disclosure

Shimmy -Amine

Really hope he has a huge year. I loved his first album but his second didn’t blow me away. This sounds like he’s gonna have some solid beats and goofy lines which is what I’m looking for.

So.incredible.pkg -Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats

If you haven’t listened to this mixtape now, you need to do so immediately. These two’s chemistry makes them just “messing around” sound like a classic.

Bean (Kobe) -Lil Uzi Vert (feat. Chief Keef)

I know I’m gonna get some hate for this, didn’t love the new Uzi. I’m sure he’s good he’s just not for me. BUT I do like this song, mainly because of Chief Keef, but regardless it’s good.

Deleter -Grouplove

Their new album dropped last week and feel like no one’s talking about it but it’s good folks! If you liked these guys as much as I did back in high school definitely worth a listen.

Alright, here’s my picks from this week. If I miss any let me know on Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, Byte, Quibi (whatever that is), you know the drill. If it’s something I like I’ll add to the playlist and give a shoutsout to you for having excellent taste.

SPICY CUTS OF THE WEEK

In Your Eyes -The Weeknd

The new album is confirmed unreal. I’m not even a Weeknd stan either. Really liked his sound on Starboy, “I Feel It Comin'” is one of the best songs of all time, but besides that not a wild fan. This is such a perfect new sound for him though. Feels like a modern classic. Must listen and this cut is my favorite off the bat.

Right -Mac Miller

The deluxe version of Circles dropped and gave us possibly the last 2 Mac tracks we’ll ever hear. This was my favorite of the two. So great just, just like the rest of the album.

Lightning -Rico Nasty

Get on the Rico train right now if you’re not already on folks.

Fair Chance -Thundercat (feat. Ty Dolla $ign and Lil B)

Very chill song, specially for quarantine season. Toss Ty Dolla on there for some vocals and a Lil B verse? Heat.

Amarillo -J Balvin

I haven’t really dove into this whole wave of latin rap/hip-hop that’s been taking over, but this album seems like it’s gonna produce some heavy radio bangers. Including this. With Takashi Murakami on his new album art too? Can’t be bad.

ANIMAL CROSSING -Shawn Wasabi (feat. Sophia Black)

Alright I’m slightly biased on this because I just got the new Animal Crossing and it’s delightful, but this is a fun little song. Also, if you haven’t seen Shawn Wasabi’s youtube videos of him making songs real time, you gotta do that right now.

That’s it for this week! Let me know what you liked, what you didn’t, and what I missed.
